A degree in Mining Engineering or Economic Geology unlocks a world of opportunities and career paths! From traveling the world to work in one-of-a-kind locations to developing the latest technological advances in the field, there’s so much graduates from our program get to achieve.
We asked alumni of the programs to submit photos that best capture the University of Arizona Mining & Geological Engineering alumni experience. We wanted to see where their career has taken them, some of the unique and exciting opportunities they’ve been a part of, and the things that make them love their jobs! We received a number of remarkable images from our alumni.

And the winner is...
Contestant: Danielle Taran, Class of 2015
Description: Alumna Danielle Taran on an educational trip to Salt Lake City, Utah. Danielle currently works for Granite Construction. One of her favorite things about the aggregate industry is that the locations are often in major cities, and she doesn't have to give up city life for her career. During this trip, she visited about 6 quarries all nestled along the mountains surrounding the city. This photo shoes the view from the top of the asphalt silos where you could see most of the plant and the adjoining quarry.
Contestant: Rogelio Martinez Parra, Class of 2015
Description: Alumnus Rogelio Para took this photo while on a night shift at Las Truchas open pit Iron Mine in Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan, Mexico. He worked there as a mine planner for 2 years.
Contestant: Taylor Dawn, Class of 2016
Description: Alumna Taylor Dawn sitting in front of one of the seven summits of the world, Puncak Jaya, located on the island of Papua in Indonesia. The elevation of where she is sitting is approximately 14,000 ft. To get to this spot, Taylor climbed stairs for over an hour! Can you say cardio workout?
Contestant: Tarun Dangi, Class of 2004
Description: Waller Creek Tunnel in the heart of downtown Austin, Texas. Approximately 1 mile and 29 ft in diameter.
The goal of this project is to reduce flood footprint in Austin to Zero percent.
Contestant: Robert Leyland, Class of 2014
Description: Alumnus Robert Leyland while working on a drilling for a Port Development on an Indian Ocean Tropical Island. A great example of the exotic locations he occasionally gets to see as geological engineers!
